faery witch

Are you a faery witch?

We’ll get to that question in a second.  Let me start off by saying there are many different types of witchcraft. And there is no right way to practice the craft. You should do what resonates with you. Follow your intuition on this one.

Let me also say, that I’m not a faery witch, but I do know one. And to write this article, I asked her some questions. I also added in my own experience with the fae.

What are Faeries?

Before we can get into what a faery witch is, let’s talk about the fae. They are fantastical creatures/beings popularized in Celtic cultures, particularly in Ireland and Scotland. They have many different names, such as the Tuatha De Danaan. Faery come in many forms such as pixies, sprites, brownies, redcaps, and the list goes on and on. There is a light (good) court and a dark (bad) court. While most of us are familiar with fairies like Tinkerbell, it is important to remember that not all fae are good or nice. From my understanding, even the “good” fae can sometimes be tricksters.

I mentioned that I have Greek and Roman heritage, and it is one of the reasons my matron goddess is Artemis.  In addition to Greek, I have a lot of ancestors from the UK. Scotland, in particular.  In fact, when I was a little girl, my grandfather used to tell me stories about the brownies. These tales were mainly about children who didn’t obey their elders, and were therefore “taken away” by the brownies. I never asked what happened after that, and I didn’t want to know, thank you very much. I’ve also had one brush with a faery ring that popped up overnight, surrounding my car, which seriously freaked me out. So, faeries are not my thing.

Other than David Bowie’s Goblin King, that is.

Mmm. Sigh. Okay, I’m back.

What is faery witchcraft?

Faery witches work closely with the fae. Like I’ve mentioned above, the fae can be tricksters just for the heck of it and temperamental if they aren’t treated properly. I would say this might be a tenuous relationship. From what I gather, faery choose to help people when and if they take a notion. However, many people love faeries and the prospect of working with them. The fae have their own sort of magic, which is extremely powerful.

Faery Witches & Deity

If a faery witch is pursuing a Wiccan path, she or he might choose to work with fae, instead of with deity. Or s/he might work with a deity that has a strong fae association like Danu or The Morrigan. Or some combination of both.

Faery Witch Altar

He or she might have representations of the faery realm on his or her altar like statues and drawings. There is also some lore on what faeries like and do not like, such as offerings made to faeries, and the removal of items from the home which harm them like iron. The fae are said to light bright and shiny objects, so using crystals, metal, glitter, and the like would be appropriate.

Resources

If any of this resonates with you, I would recommend reading up on the various types of fae and deciding which of them you’d like to work with and then begin cultivating a relationship. I would also highly recommend Storm Faerywolf, an author and witch who works with the fae. Particularly his book, Betwixt and Between.

Do you work with faeries in your practice? Or would you like to? Tell me about it below.
