Want to know how to consecrate an object? It’s a basic Wicca skill and I can teach you a few easy ways to do it, using items you probably already have in your house.

Why do I need to do this?

Before using an object for magical purposes, you should get rid of any lingering bad or harmful energies. Some people refer to this as cleansing the object, or blessing it. Honestly, I consider consecration a mixture of those two. You are removing any nasties, AKA cleansing it, and getting the item ready for magical use, or blessing it.

Methods to Consecrate

There are several methods you can use. It really doesn’t matter which one you choose, as long as it feels right to you. You can cast a circle before you do this work, or not.  While performing this ritual, I close my eyes and picture white light bathing the item, stripping away any negativity. You can also chant or think, I consecrate you. Or you can substitute the words bless or cleanse. Again, whatever feels natural.

This is the easiest method and the one I use most often. I light incense and run the object through the smoke. You can also use a candle for the same purpose. Another smoke method is lighting a bay leaf. Bay leaves can be used for banishing evil.  Just be careful not to burn your fingers.

You may or may not want to use water to consecrate an item, because it could potentially damage it (for instance, a book). I use water infused with rosemary essential oil for this purpose since it has purification properties. I just run the object through the mist from my oil diffuser. You could also splash the item with the oil and water, if you don’t have one.

I actually use epsom salts for consecration because they are super cheap, widely available, and they often come infused with herbs. Just sprinkle the salt all over the item and then shake it off.

How do you cleanse and bless your magical tools? Have you used one of these methods?
